Chinese martial arts experts hit Chiang Mai

18 Apr 2011

The Thai-Chinese Martial Arts Tour that began on 1 April will reach Chiang Mai this week. Several performances by skilled artistes are set to thrill audiences at the 700 Year Stadium close to the Chiang Mai City Provincial Hall.

The three hour-long extravaganza features performances by Guangzhou’s Yate acrobatic dancers, Chinese folk art renditions and the Shaolin Kung Fu troupe’s interpretation of Goddess of Mercy Guan Yin’s Thousand Hands show. These exciting scenes are then followed by Thai kick-boxers, Chinese acrobats and dancers from both countries.

The shows are collectively entitled Roi Duang Jai Chao Jeen Thai, which roughly translates as 100 Chinese and Thai hearts, and are being staged in honour of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 84th birthday in December. The tour has already been to Pattaya, Bangkok’s Muang Thong Thani Exhibition Centre and Khon Kaen in eastern Thailand.

The shows in Chiang Mai are being staged between the 22 and 27 April and mark the final leg of the tour. The shows are scheduled to commence at 19:00 and there will be extra matinee performances on the weekend at 14:00.

Ticket prices range from 300 to 750 baht, but there are discounts available for bulk purchases, students and Thai government officers and civil servants. Information is available at Chiang Mai’s tourist authority office, 02-8335555 and www.totalreservation.com. The latter also offers an advance booking service.
