TWO men and a woman were arrested in the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand on Sunday after being caught with 300,000 methamphetamine pills worth around one million US dollars .
It is thought the haul was prepared for being shipped to Bangkok when it was seized in a police raid. The trio had been tracked while they travelled around the north of the Kingdom and when police pounced the drugs were discovered contained in boxes in the back of their truck.
All three of those arrested were from the ethnic minority Hmong and hae been charged with possession of illicit substances and remanded for trial. Police experts estimate the haul is worth 919 million dollars on the street today.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) say amphetamine drugs of this type are the biggest problem facing Thailand’s security forces and those across Southeast Asia. The offence of trafficking drugs officially can be met with execution, although in reality such punishment is rare.
