MORE than five kilos of potentially lethal methamphetamine worth around 10 million baht was seized in Chiang Mai early Wednesday morning.
Two men were arrested at a checkpoint after drugs were found in their vehicles at around 1am in Mae Na Wang, Mae Ai district, Major-General Sawat Krataithong told a press conference.
Both drivers, Kammoon Yomkham, 51, and Sukhon Kongmuang, 48, were interrogated and gave up information leading to the arrest of a third man, Sawang Himavej, 54. All three men are from Fang to the north of Chiang Mai.
Officials have said that the ice is produced in a neighbouring country and sells for 600,000-700,000 baht per kilo, but that is costs roughly 1 million baht per kilo once over the Thai border. Elsewhere the drug could go for as much as 1.5 to 2 million baht per kilo.
As of December 25 to January 6, at least 15 individuals were arrested for drug trafficking in nine different instances around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces.
A total of 542,400 methamphetamine pills have been seized along with 20kg of opium, 0.3 grammes of heroin, and the 5.4kg of ‘ice’ seized from the three men.
