Chiang Mai readies for Royal Birthday

The entire Kingdom of Thailand readies itself annually to celebrate one occasion more than any other.  It is the birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand—on the fifth of December, and this year will mark the 82nd birthyear of the world’s longest reigning monarch.

Celebrations on a grand scale are planned throughout the country; highlights of which will of course, be in Bangkok, where the King resides.

Chiang Mai too, will be out in its festive best, to pay its respects to the King. Besides celebrations that will be held at schools, homes, public offices and other public venues, a group of minority Chiang Mai residents will be travelling all the way to the capital expressly in the hope of conveying their best wishes personally to Thailand’s revered King.

Around 600 people in total, including people from other areas like Phayao and Kamphaeng Phet are expected to make this trip this year. Besides this group, there will also be groups of other travelling citizens and students that will make the journey to Bangkok for the occasion.

So gargantuan are the celebrations each year, that Bangkok will have its security profile boosted; with the Metropolitan Administration providing an additional 124 CCTV cameras.

For those who cannot travel to Bangkok; the celebrations in Chiang Mai are expected to be just as colourful and fervent.
